Painting stucco isn't like painting wood or drywall. Stucco is masonry. It's porous, it moves with heat and moisture, and every hairline crack or bad patch underneath will telegraph straight through a fresh coat. That's why the painting jobs that fail early almost always failed at the stucco, not the paint.

Repair first

Cracks are opened, filled and textured, and damaged areas rebuilt. Paint goes over sound stucco or it doesn't go on.

Wash & prep

The surface is cleaned of chalk, dirt and anything loose so the new coat can actually grip the wall.

Prime where needed

Repairs, stains and bare stucco get a primer made for masonry so the finish coat covers evenly and bonds properly.

Stucco Painting Questions

Can you paint over stucco?
Yes. Sound stucco takes paint very well when it's properly cleaned, repaired and primed where needed. What doesn't work is painting over damage. Paint hides a problem for a season, then the crack or blister telegraphs right back through. We fix the stucco first, then paint it.
Should stucco cracks be repaired before painting?
Always. Paint isn't a crack filler. Even thick coatings bridge almost nothing, and sealing a wet or moving crack under fresh paint just traps the problem. Repairing first is exactly why homeowners have a stucco contractor do their stucco painting.
How often does stucco need repainting in South Florida?
Sooner than in milder climates, because our UV and storm driven rain are hard on any coating. Many exteriors are ready again somewhere in the 5 to 10 year range, with the sun baked walls facing south and west fading first. If yours just needs a wash rather than paint, we'll tell you that.
Can the color of my stucco be changed?
Yes. A full repaint is the most common way to change a stucco home's color, and going lighter or darker is both possible with the right preparation and coverage. Dark colors run hotter in Florida sun, which is worth a conversation before you commit.
